True Earth is a maker of water base weathering agents and pigments. They continually are adding to their line of products with new ways to create a great looking weathering. The latest product from True Earth is their “Burnt Out” pack. This weathering package is designed to help the model builder create a burned effect on a vehicle or other object.
The package from True Earth comes in a nifty looking box and contains 5 new weathering colors and a primer. There is also a very helpful pamphlet inside with weathering tips and instructions to create the burnt out effect. The weathering colors included in the box are specific to creating this effect, and include:
- Burnt Primer – 26ml
- Burnt Rust G – 17ml
- Burnt Rust R – 17ml
- Burnt Steel – 17ml
- Burnt Smoke – 17ml
- Burnt Ash – 17ml
The primer is a resin/acrylic base that is what I can best describe as sort of khaki tan color. The remaining bottles are the basic True Earth water based Structure Filters. The two rust colors are similar to a light and dark rust color, while the burnt steel is as it is described. The smoke is almost a black color, while the ash is similar to an ivory white.
The small instruction pamphlet provides some great information on the application of True Earth products in terms of how to apply different washes. It then provides a quick example of how to apply the above colors to achieve a basic burned look. While each burned look can take on its own look, it will be up to the model builder to use the combination of colors to achieve their desired look.
Not having a vehicle on hand to try the “Burnt Out” effect on, I gave the pack a little spin using a couple of jerry cans and a barrel. Basically following the directions provided in the set, I applied the primer first. While a little thin, it leaves the part with that khaki tan color. After the parts had dried, I began applying the structured filters in various patterns and layers. While I have to apologize to True Earth, being a beginner with this product, I am not sure I totally achieved what would be the total proposed effect, but the colors provided in the set do provide an excellent starting point to creating a burned out look.
Overall this is a great package from True Earth, and does provide some excellent looking structured filters for applying a burned out look. The colors will provide the modeler with a good starting point to be creative and artistic in achieving this effect. I am very impressed with the color selection, and my novice approach at creating the effect turned out not too bad. I would highly recommend the “Burnt Out” Pack as a great starting point for adding that scorched effect.
