Jean-Louis takes a look at and builds the French light armoured car AML-60 with 60mm mortar from Takom in 1/35th scale.

Impressive-looking postwar armoured car. Look forward to seeing more of the same.

Good review, I am just finishing up one of these and agree with the main findings.Thank you.

The only minor gripes I would have are the order of some of the construction and the location of the rear suspension springs is somewhat ambivalent and could have been covered better in the drawings. The latter in genearl are however excellent.

The use of rubber tires is unusual but they fit well.

Apart from the lack of interior the only other glaring omssion are the lack of wire frames around the headlight and the lack of the inclusion of the HB variant armament. Perhaps Takom plan on releasing the latter at a later date?

BKirwan: thank you. You are right. I forgot to mention the problem with the location of the rear suspension springs. I made the mistake due to the ambivalent description on the notice and had to remove them before re-gluing at the right place. Rubber tires seem to be a little bit oversized when you compare to pictures of the real AML 60.

Oversized rubber tires.....now that you mention it that might explain the tight fit. Thanks will have to seek replacements

The fit of some of these pieces is awful, and needlessly complex. Just to illustrate, was it really necessary, to make each front fender a fragile subassembly made up of four pieces? These fenders could have been simplified, with no loss in detail.

Hi
While I agree that the breakdown of parts in the kit is unnecessarily complex I have to disagree with the comment about the fit of these multi part sub assembelies. I am on my second one and the fit is excellent.

I whacked the first one together in under 6 hours of assembly and the fit was nearly flawless.

I just beg to differ.

Good luck with the rest of your kit. I hope the rest of my experience matches yours.

Got at least a couple of aftermarket companies now making 16 inch resin wheel/tires for the AML. A welcomed addition indeed (D.E.F. Models and Blast Models).

Already have a couple of the D.E.F. sets ordered.

Will be scanning the manufacturers for other tire substitutes as well.

This was only a build review. I will do a diorama as soon as I get french decals: 1er REC (Régiment Étranger de Cavalerie), armoured regiment from the french Foreign Legion.
