Interesting as to what the 251 will be, their current(old) tooling is old, and has some fit issues, a new tool would be nice, and a first for them.

I wouldn't put too much hope in a new tool for the 251/D Ausf. D.
They have done other variants on the Ausf. D chassis before and they have some or most of the gun parts. Some new bits and pieces to make it fit together but nothing radical.
Just my guesses, I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though

That M54 just looks fantastic! I can see me buying four or five, and we all know they're going to do an OEM built quad fifty gun truck in the near future.
The Hawk missile tractor seriously interests me as well. (best duty in RVN). Still, other than the M54 truck that seriously makes me do the happy dance is the Korean war Centurion. I'll do a couple of them, so lets hope they do a good job with their research.
I re-read the entire thread as it's a little dated. My comments about the Honest John truck is taken from a good look at one parked about a twenty minutes from me (Camp Atteberry). It for sure a much heavier chassis than a five ton, and looks to be built off the ten ton wrecker platform. (may be even heavier)
We for sure need a ten ton wrecker, and I for one would be all over it.

Rob,
The truck next to the iron fence is the one south of me. Trust me it just looks like a modified five ton chassis. Even the drive train is heavier. It has a similar set as to the five ton, but things start to change. Somewhere on a hard drive I have about fifty photos of that truck, and need to find them again. That or take a sunny day down there. If I do get the time, I'll build a DVD for you all to share.

aftermarket compagnies will have to do new front wheels! The gun trucks , from memory, are mainly equiped with road tyres .
I have a set of Réal models wheels so i'll use thé front wheels.
Anyway, the kit of the years for me even if my Vietnam modelling interest is a bit gone.

we got a brand new M54 gun truck in early 69. Everything on it was new, and it came with a quad fifty mounted on it. The tires were the same all the way around. 36 Hours later it was a burnt out wreck!

Hello, I am new to the group. I wanted to talk about the AFV M54A2 5-Ton truck. A great kit. My thoughts are this about the kit. I was an Army C64 20, Motor Transport Operator (truck driver) from 1978 to 1981. I never saw a M54 truck with drop sides. Doesn`t mean they were not around, I just never saw one. Most all M 813s had a drop side bed. Since it is easier to make the drop side bed a stationary bed instead of making a stationary bed a drop side, my thinking is could a M813 A1 5-Ton be in the works? I hope so.

Take a close look at the photos of the Honest John above, and you'll see the launchers are entirely different. I wonder if one is a later one with a different truck body? It looks a little different around the rear duals, especially the design of the rear fenders which look lighter than the one with the heavier launching frame. I too would love to see an Honest John launcher come out of the AFV club design group!

Wonder how hard it would be to adapt the Renwal crane to the Afv-club kit?(just musing the difference in scale and different generation of detail is enough to put me off)
There is enough in common that the M54 could serve as a basis for an M139 bridging truck and Honest John launcher. The later South Korean tactical missile truck was also based on it.
