Would the King Tiger, either variant , have been around to have seen combat on the eastern front when the wheat/ plains grass was tall. I had an idea of a diorama witha King Tiger in tall Wheat / rolling plains grass. I just wanted to make sure it would be time period correct? I’d like to do an octopus like camouflage If possible but I’m not sure if it would have been around for the time when the wheat fields or plains grass would be tall

The earliest versions, with the Porsche turret were in Normandy early enough to suffer through the carpet bombing that destroyed many units. Schwere Panzer Abteilung 503.

The first unit on the Eastern Front to be equipped with Tiger IIs was the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion (schwere Panzerabteilung 501) when it was reformed in Germany in July '44 after following total destruction fighting the Red Army earlier that year. Their first combat engagement using their new equipment was in early August in south-eastern Poland.

The wheat harvest on that latitude is around late summer - early autumn, so yes, tall wheat/grass sounds like a plausible option there (you have to give up the idea of the octopus camo though).

The war in Europe ended in early May 1945, so if you want a Tiger II with octopus camo in tall wheat/grass setting, your best shot is probably depict an abandoned one in the summer of '45.

Would the two tone camo not have been around for a Tiger II to be going through any y’all grass or wheat fields? Would it be better to do more of a three tone camo ? Or would there have been enough y’all grass in the Ruhr pocket in spring of 45 to do something like this

I'm only aware of a single tank in the octopus scheme, in 1945, though you could do a what-if version, of course.

The Army 501st in Poland would be a better bet, with Zimmerit and soft-edged three-color camouflage. The 501st markings had a distinctive number font, with the number three having a flat top edge, rather than rounded.

I wasn’t aware that that was a one time paint scheme. But i think I’m looking more and more at your suggestion. I was just enamored by the Academy Tiger II with octopus camp so it caught my attention for a long time.

Yes, the octo tank only has one known example. I followed a build where the fellow extensively researched it and he could find no others.

That’s actually a lot of help thank you for that bit of information. That being said I’m going to transition to a three tone paint scheme possibly using the Ammo Mig late war Camo set that they released for the takom kit.0

Greg,
I have to smile at the way your computer auto-corrected "tall" to "y'all". it must have been made in southern Taiwan.

I’m sorry I’m not the best at editing. I’m actually doing this on an IPhone but you caught me. I’m actually from Southern California originally but attended college at the citadel in South Carolina so that will explain my southern taiwan
