I'd say use the LRDG front, with Italeri closed cab.

I went to that site but could not find what you are referring to.

I seem to remember an article some years back where the guy made a hard cab cargo truck but it seemed he had to split the cab and make it wider to work.

Maybe it's just me, but the closed cab doesn't look like it is scratchbuilt :



I would say the rear part of the cab at least is not from the Italeri CCKW kit....

The guy says that "This is old Tamiya's kit but I don't know its number - just the same base as Chevrolet LRDG but with complete cabin" To me this doesn't necessarily mean that he has scrachbuilt the cab....

That is a interesting idea. While maybe not a great photo, the first pic of the before project doesn’t appear to look that bad under the tarp area. Maybe damaged the area in the clean up process and needed to hide it.

I realised where I'd seen that closed cab before - that guy used the cab from the original Italeri Katyusha kit, the one that used the post-war Soviet copy of the Deuce. Not quite a GM product, but still looks cool...

Unfortunately no, that was the closest thing to an engineering drawing in the entire install manual. And all the photos in the pdf file were basically just black silhouettes with no rear view of the pump.

Not exactly on the list of things I want to build, but definitely high on the "do-ability" index. But the cab does not need to be widened - it is in fact slightly too wide already. A "V" shaped notch in the hood with a sliver of Evergreen would seem to do the trick.
As for the builder hiding something, personally I find it unlikely given the amount of skill he's already displayed. That and the fact that dudes actually do these sorts of things in real life with angle grinders, welders, maybe a generous supply of Bondo or melted lead.

I have always thought that LRDG truck to be an excellent work from Tamiya. Just never understood why Pappa Tamiya did not parlay that design/mold work into a hard cab cargo truck version as well.

As a small aside: The seats used in that truck are some of the best model work in the industry. (I guess b/c they are openly exposed to view.) For my money those seats need to be copied into a two part 3D print for use in every CCKW, Chevy and IH truck kit sold on the market today.

Sadly not a hint for me! My CAD is good for "mechanical" things, but not for sculpting soft organic shapes like seat cushions. You'd be better off using RTV rubber to make moulds of the kit parts and then casting them the traditional way...
