I will make the further observation regarding the difficulties of access to old product reviews and model build logs.

- Every model, no matter how old, is a new model to someone building it for the first time - but now it will be difficult or impossible to search the past threads to find reference material to better prepare for the task of building.

Also really don't think it is fair or viable to suggest that we copy over 40+ pages of data and mutual exchanges in an "old forum" thread that's been accrued over the last 8+ years!

simply an open letter about what I thought this site was about

discuss current events in the hobby world
this site as being a modeler's reference

if you burn down the library!

"WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"

Hai,

I used to be a regular on Aeroscale. I have become a silent, and very irregular, visitor because the software freak in me took over from the modeler and I just couldn't stand anymore dealing with faulty galleries, misbehaving latest post pages and totally outdated technologies in general.

I support, to some extend, what I have taken from your post above. Dropping a reference base with the huge content, and history, of this forum, may seem almost criminal to someone not being a computer freak.

However, in technological terms, this site (and sadly enough perhaps not only the forum) resembles an old ruin, it still stands to the total surprise of any archtect visiting it, and it will only take one unfriendly visitor to kick one technological brick over and it will crumble.

Hence, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" : simple: there is no other option: 14? years without much maintenance has turned this site into an anomaly, it moves to something modern, or it will desintegrate. I just find it a miracle that no hacker has had a good laugh yet. They all must love modelling.

But maybe it is not necessary to torch the library:

It's not so bad once you get used to it. For me, I only have one badge. Procrastinator to the end. Heck maybe they will give us old forum users a badge or something to recognize us as the Kitmaker ancient ones. Especially us subscribers.

Cheers

You actually have four badges by now.
Click Like (the heart symbol) on some post and earn another badge
Linking to something or adding a picture might get you another like.
The badges and levels feels like some gamification to get users to learn more about the tool they are using.

You can really tell kids from the adults. A kid gets all excited about some "badge" for posting. An adult wants to read about what others are doing, what new kits are on the horizon, tools and paints and other advances. This site is going the way of a gamer site. Totally useless. I have a feeling some of us aren't going to be sticking around.

This site is an archive. A library. A repository of data by the modelers who have had hands on experience with kits, tools and products. A place where people have posted their techniques for handling certain situations, problems with kits that other modelers might not be aware of, reviews, opinions, tips and all the data you can only get through word of mouth because most books couldn't contain it all. There are modelers on here who have been building not for years but for decades. I reached the half century mark last month, I'm still learning, I still passing on what others have taught me and like other, experienced modelers, I'll share what I know. To me the only stupid question is the one not asked. But now newbies have to play a stupid game to get to post questions, follow silly, childish, guidelines to advance or be able to post more often.

Childish and ridiculous.

So then,is the idea to just allow this forum to just whither away on the vine just let it fade away like MacArthur's old soldier.

To those "electronic architects" who lament the current archaic programming of the current website I'm not saying not to improve or change or upgrade the system at will.

However to come this far down a path and to then present us with such a "final solution" that basically throws out the "baby AND the bath water" is simply unacceptable.

As I said elsewhere: when the powers that be reached the point in the process where they realized the new solution would bring about the burning of the library they should have stopped right there and looked for a different course of action!

(To their credit; I am sure those in power thought long and hard about this issue before proceeding. However IMHO they simply made the WRONG decision. That plus they never put the question before the actual users probably because they knew their proposal would be rejected.)

Of course no one ever said this site was a Democracy or even a Republic.

Please note the hit counts on these otherwise very active "old" threads.

Only took me about 10 minutes to put this rather brief list of "active threads" together

I was actually referring to the campaign badges - I guess the better term would be ribbons sorry for the confusion. Off to get my lolly pop.

341,000+ hits on this thread but we're just gonna stop this discussion in its' tracks and move on!

Quoted Reply from Gino:
Best bet is to start a new thread on the new forum with a link in it back to this one. That is what I did with my ongoing MLRS build. Also post a link here to the new forum thread.

Don't worry, the asteroid was just space junk and we will all come through just fine.

My Quoted Reply to Gino:
Sorry but your solution is not really a solution -- we are not being told just how long the links to this "old" data will survive or just what shape this new "future archive" will take.

The only solid statements we have heard so far are:

#1 We don't know how long this "old forum" data will remain available.

#2 We don't know what form this future data archive will take.

This is all sounding just so much more and more ultra trustworthy to me, don't you think?

Crap I come to this forum in part to get away from all the political bull [auto-censored] of the outside world and now I get the same stuff here.

- Changes beyond my control.
- No clear information as to what is to come.
- Just the constant message "Change is a Comm'n!" - like it or lump it!

Sorry Michael,
I totally agree. But my Navy mindset after 45 years (pre-PC) still kicks in. The first instance when you see someone's alligator mouth override their hummingbird ass. The first reflex is to rip their lips off and stick them to their forehead so they can see what they just said. Hang in there. I sure am trying but maybe not helping so much.

Cheers

Hey Jim/Robbin/Darrin: I have asked Jim this question before but never got an answer.

Above it says on the shield that I am KitMaker Subscriber #0

Is that a data error in the old system or am I actually the first subscriber?

Just curious - I would really appreciate an answer this time.

Hey Robbie I just noticed your tailpiece message at the bottom of your post:

Robbie: "Would 60 Gallons be sufficient ?"

You did not have to tell me where the quote came from - I knew immediately!

Very cool!

In the computer world it is a value - means before 1. So you are before subscriber 1

P.S. you have any M7 Priests in your neck of the woods? My Stepdad was a driver for one with Georgie's 3rd Army. Thinking of doing one up some day - eyeing Airfix/academy

The Patton (now Benning) had a Priest but I never ever saw it outside the Museum. I know I have a couple of photos somewhere. I will see if I can scare them up for you!

Only two photos I could come up with on short notice from my digital files. The other photos are probably in my old negative files.
