I am not sure that I will stick around with the "new" forum format. I have been trying to navigate it and it is just beyond the pale.

Why is there always a move to fix what isn't broken? I don't get it.

First and above, *it is* broken. The same you can not use coal on your car, old software has troubles running on new platforms and any issue becomes more and more difficult to solve.

And also the new system has great advantages, specially for adding photos it is a wonder. You can copy&paste, add a link, upload from your computer... everything easy and straightforward. Plus using it from mobiles or tablets is way better than the current format.

Rest assured the change is for good, and after some time you will see it. Like evolution from cassette to CD to MP3 to spotify

You would think in this day and age that we'd have the technology and know how, to upgrade without having to change the look and feel of the old way.
It's like upgrading from vinyl to MP3 but you can't listen to classical music anymore coz that's old stuff......Rant Over

A lot of music slightly outside the main interest and available on vinyl, has not been issued on CD. A friend of mine has a huge collection of folk music, primarily from the Balkan, and nowhere to be found on cd.

Kitmaker MUST move to a new platform or platforms, or soon there will be no more kitmaker; and this does not only apply to the forum, I am affraid.

But you are right in one thing, the old valuable stuff should be ported. But don't forget this comes at a cost, I wonder how much diskspace this 20? year old forum is taking?

Guys, I'm not sure why there are multiple posts! I didn't do it!

It happens occasionally.
I THINK it may have something to do with delays and the relative sluggishness of this forum.
'Ready to Reply Yes' nothing happens, click again
OR it is something in the interaction between the forum code and the browser.

The new forum is a LOT more responsive (hint. hint, wink, wink)

Thanks, Robin. I'm sure that I will get used to it. I appreciate the nudge and wink.

I still cannot log onto the new forum. I'm used to old setup, and like it better. Yet as many have stated it was a little too slow, and sometimes didn't work at all. I'll figure it out sooner than later

You need to register and create a new user in the new forum.
The account creation process includes responding to an activation e-mail. This e-mail can go missing (e-mail providers hating each other).
I monitor the new accounts and when I think that someone has gotten stuck on the e-mail issue I step in and activate the account.

Use the same username as here (easier to recognise) and set a password of your choice.

My 2 cents worth...I don't like the look of the new forums. BUT.....the chance to post pictures easily negates any issues I have with the look. I have been here since 2002. I love this site, financially support it, and will follow in any direction it needs to go. i don't like being a novice again...but I'll get over it.

I wonder how much diskspace this 20? year old forum is taking?

The Model Shipwrights backup by itself (with only it's forums and posts - and sadly not even all of them on the first/second run) was 7GB. I am guessing the Armorama archive will be 3-4x that much. Of course I am not just backing up local files, but remote files to preserve them for the discussions, etc. That might be a mistake, but we shall see.

By the way I did see your post about the Discourse PHPBB? forum port. I will look at that but of course our forums are a completely different database scheme so even trying something like that might require a lot of configuration changes.

Cheers,
Jim

The improved functionality on the new sites are of an order of magnitude better IMHO. The new look is something to get used to. But hey it works so I'm in.
