Nice job, Eagle. I didn't mean to imply that your method was "too metallic" (heck, I hadn't seen the results, so how could I criticize?). I just know that I have seen many articles and buildups that say "a careful drybrushing with silver to pick up the highlights...". Silver is not a normal color for undamaged weapons, and neither are most of the lighter metallics. My point was that except for one or two small parts, most (real) weapons don't show metallic colors. I suspect your method helps to provide highlights and shadowing, and it appears that the pencils don't come off as terribly metallic. If it looks right, then go with it!

I find drybrushing with Testors aluminum works well on black to bring out detail and give a weathered appearance, without leaving a glistening metallic shine to the object. I use aluminum not just on guns, but on black boxes, etc. It's not necessarily the colour you really see, but IMHO, I think it looks right. For my next gun, though, I will be trying the silver pencil method. I happen to have a set of Prismacolors sitting around

About plastic in guns...
This was something to solve when I had to display a Finnish RK62 AK variant.
I ended up painting the plastic parts very dark gray and metal parts matt black enamel(not properly mixed). I drybrushed the metal parts with thin aluminium acrylics. My personal weapon in army had suffered quite a lot of wear and the matt black finish was full of scratches and aluminium-coloured marks. It turned out ok in the model!

Toni,
Is that picture showing the real thing or a 1/1 scale model ?

I used to make a few 1:1 scale models of the M16A1, AK47, etc. Most are broken since, but I still have the hand grenades. I swear you couldn't see it's plastic as long as you don't pick it up !

When I was in the Marines, my M-16 was made up of several different weapons components. I had a new barrel, and an old worn, lots of silver, lower receiver, a kind of worn upper receiver and a buttstock that was basically black with some lighter areas from wear. All of our magazines, (clips), were different colors. Some were grey with gold color wear underneath. Some were grey with silver wear underneath. Some were even slightly green.
