1⁄1M9A1 Halftrack WalkRound
a bit of BackgroundFour manufacturers built the U.S. Halftrack during and prior to WWII - White, Autocar, Diamond T and International Harvester. The overwhelming majority of the latter company's production was exported in the form of Lend-Lease to a variety of users - the U.K, France, the Soviet Union etc.
The subjectThe subject of this feature was (in its service days), as far as I can ascertain, an M9a1 in British service. It was manufactured by International Harvester and supplied as part of the U.S. Lend-Lease program. Being an M9a1, the vehicle was built between march 1943 and december of the same year (unless of course it was part of the remanufacturing program of 1945 which created a further 791 vehicles). The M9a1 was principally supplied as an artillery prime-mover for AT or light/medium artillery pieces.
The PhotosThe photos were taken in july this year at the Devon Branch of the Military Vehicle Trust's annual rally at Buckfastleigh, Devon, in SW England. It's a small rally, but always manages to have some beautifully restored and unusual subjects present.
