USS North Carolina

To wind up the tour, I finally made it back topside, to the main deck. I took this picture (sort of obligatory on battleships!) from the forecastle.

This anchor was the starboard anchor.

The ship, when it was being towed up the river to its current berth, was caught in a storm, and the tugboats didn't have enough power to keep it in place when the storm passed through. So they dropped the anchor to stabilize the ship. However, since there was no power aboard the ship, they couldn't raise the anchor, so 2 men volunteer to cut the anchor cable and free the ship. The placard describing this activity didn't say where they anchor cable was cut - down at the anchor itself, or if the cable was just cut on the deck.

These last pictures are of a twin 5" mount on the 01 level (i.e., one deck above the main deck). I wished I had climbed inside the turret, but I was pretty wrung out, and wasn't too sure of my footing to get up the footholds and into the turret.
