Roden have sent us details of their latest 1:35 softskin vehicle. The Opel Blitz bus saw widespread service with German forces in many roles.

# 808 Opel Blitz 3.6 – 47 Omnibus model W39 Ludewig built, late
Opel Blitz 3.6 – 47 Omnibus model W39 Ludewig – German staff bus of the WWII period, designed on the chassis of well-known Opel Blitz three ton truck. Series production lasted from 1939 until 1943, at the Ludewig plant in German city of Essen. From 1941 a number of changes were made to the construction of the bus, in particular, the spare wheel was moved to the left side of the body in a special niche. Almost three thousand units of this type were produced during this time, which were employed at every front of the war, as a conveyance for officers and an ambulance, as well as a staff transport, a telephone exchange, a radio station, and more.

Hmmm I will gather and buy accessories to fill its roof. Not so easy.

W-E-L-L . . . . . There WAS a 1/35th scale vac-form kit of the bus offered some years back. I finished the hard part and was very happy with the results but sadly never took it any further.

Some reference material: There was a large rear loading door. The roof access ladder is split at the line of the drip strip to accommodate this door.

As you can see the floor under the driver (ahead of the entry doors) was at the standard Blitz truck height. Then there was a step down to the main passenger area.

The above may or may not be a Blitz bus. It easily could be from a different manufacture. The wooden seats are an interesting detail and please note the jump seat in the driver's forward cab passenger area. Bottom two photos are bus frame details taken of the extended body cargo truck on display at the Victory Museum, Auburn, Indiana.

I'm going to get this kit only because I've been waiting so long for an injection molded version of this vehicle in 1/35. I have the Roden Rolls Royce Armored car and I'm not too thrilled about their molding and detailing. I really have been waiting a long time for this kit.....ever since seeing "Where Eagles Dare" (Agenten Sterben Einsam). Maybe Black Dog will come out with an accessory set for this like they did with the Armored car kit.
