Introduction:

After releasing over 100 figure sets, many of which are reviewed on Armorama (link), Evolution Miniatures recently launched a new line of products envisioned to encompass diorama accessories in 1/35 scale. The first release in the new line is Fence PO-2, For the Territory of the Former USSR (EMA-35001).

Review:

The kit is packed in a standard Evolution cardboard box featuring a large box art image sticker displaying the contents of the set. The box art lists the set was sculpted using 3D technology, which is a first in the entire Evolution Miniatures portfolio. The technology utilizes specialized CAD software and high-resolution rapid prototyping to create the 3D design which is then transferred to resin.

The box is jam-packed and the zip-lock bag contains 7 large resin pieces:

- wall segment (3x),
- wall base (4x).

The cast is impeccable with no air-bubbles, seam lines or any visible imperfections whatsoever. The pieces do not have casting blocks attached and are ready to use directly from the box… a big plus in my book!

This set delivers a really nice 1/35 scale rendition of a concrete fence called “Plate Fence PO-2” („плита ограды ПО-2“), the fence design that had colonized the entire Soviet Union. While the cast-iron fences were used for places which needed to look pretty, the concrete fence was used for anyplace else: to protect factory lots, school grounds, construction sites, etc. The base is a truncated pyramid (75 x 95 x 55 cm) with a hole for anchoring the wall support columns. The wall segment (300 x 250 x 15 cm) is set into the base, and sand or earth can be poured around the base foundation to keep everything secure. The pieces in this set are accurately scaled and feature identical wall pattern I found on PO-2 reference photos. The fence is easily assembled with wall segments which fit well into the base. The only thing to add are the lifting hooks on the base, which can be built from scratch using copper wire of appropriate diameter.

Conclusion:

The Fence PO-2 (EMA-35001) is the first set from the new Evolution Miniatures line of 1/35 scale diorama accessories. It includes 7 pieces, perfectly cast in resin, ready to use straight from the box. Designed using CAD software, this set delivers a concrete fence common to the entire former USSR providing a great addition to any post-WW2 USSR / Russian diorama.
SUMMARY
Highs: Delivered using rapid prototyping and perfectly transferred to resin. The pieces feature no casting blocks and are easy to build.
Lows: No wire for lifting hooks supplied.
Verdict: Highly recommended.

You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
