French House Ruin

Introduction

I went to Telford Scale Model World in 2006 and returned with my suitcases crammed with Great North Roads products. I had seen them advertised on model sites and in magazines, but the cost involved with shipping them to the states due to the weight negated the desire to purchase them directly from the manufacturer via mail order.

Now, Great North Roads has a distributor in the U.S., TankRat’s AFV Depot, which is great news to North America because his pricing structure is in-line with other manufacturer’s ‘diorama products’ readily available in the states. It won’t cost an arm and leg to have access to the full line of Great North Road’s products (and an extensive line it is).

review

The French House Ruin is a small two piece kit cast in a very strong, dense dental plaster. The kit arrived in a typical GNR cardboard box with the pieces individually secured in bubble wrap. The main (front) section of the house measures 9” (22.9cm) across the front and 6” (15.2cm) at its highest point. The ‘side’ section of the ruin measures 3” (7.6cm) along the bottom and 6.5” (16.5cm) at its highest point.

The detail is exquisite as the castings depict brick, stone block and plaster areas on the house with battle damage around several of the window areas. The side piece has a cross brace cast into it with a large bolt in its center…a very nice touch commonly seen on the old brick buildings.

Conclusion

If it sounds to you as though I like Great North Roads products, you are right. I love the high detail and subject matter that GNR produces. The French House Ruin is no exception, brilliant in its simplicity yet enough attention to detail that it is really a nice kit.
SUMMARY
Highs: As stated above, subject matter, detail, superb casting .
Lows: Typical of any cast kit detail only on one side, finished piece will need scratch work done on interior walls. Window detail will need to be added such as sashes and frames.
Verdict: Another solid kit from Great North Roads. Wonderful that they are now available in the U.S.

I live in the mountains north of Santa Cruz California. I have been building now since the early 1990's when I rediscovered modeling. Most of my kits are built with dioramas in mind. I took a "creative block" hiatis for a couple years - 2011 to 2013. I wasn't active in the modeling world. During tha...

Hi Charles, Good review. I have some of their figures I've been meaning to review but only one came with the packaging. They have some neat items and it's good to see their products getting some air time. BTW if you're suitcase is too heavy just send it to me Do any of the buildings come with a base or are they just walls etc to mount as you like? I shall have to go shopping this weekend! Al

I like Great North Roads stuff- very crisp casting and detail. Like Alan I also have some of the British Infantry figs which are very good.

Alan, If you check out GNR website it looks like a lot of the kits offered under the "Buildings and Ruins" heading are also offered in the "Diorama Bases" section (with the addition of the base) All the stuff I brought back were ruins on really nice bases, crossroads with trolley rails, railroad crossings etc. Just really nice stuff and a tremendous selection. Cheers, Charles PS: kinda defeat the purpose of saving the shipping costs if I send the suitcase back to Britain

Thanks Charles, I am looking for a couple of generic type bases, that will be fairly fast and straigt forward builds. Royal Models have a couple I'm thinking of and there were a coupel on the GNR site that also interested me, but it's not alwasy clear if the buildings come with the base. Cheers Al
