Modern Clamping Tools

Introduction

Modern vehicles are usually packed with equipment due to the duration of the mission. It’s normal to see this equipment firmly attached to the vehicle with different tie-downs and buckles.
It was difficult to find ratchet tie downs in 1/35 scale in large numbers in one kit, Pro Art Models clearly fills up this absence with this set.

Contents

One PE fret and 10 resin parts plus a B&W instruction set.

The PE fret contains the following clamping tools:
• 14 Ratchet tie-down
• 26 hooks for straps
• 3 chains
• 20 hooks for chains
• 8 complete straps with 3 different components.

Review

The PE chain is a nice addition, maybe harder to use compared to normal chain. The chain hook is great and can be attached to numerous items. No construction needed here.

The ratchet tie-down is composed of 4 PE parts, and you need to add copper wires to complete them. In my opinion, the diameter of the copper wire indicated in the instructions for the handle is too small, (0.4mm), maybe 0.8mm wire will be a better choice. Two small circles representing the cogged teeth need to be glued in place, but it's really hard to see them after construction. Two options of straps are provided, with the adjustment parts utilizing 3 PE parts each.

One piece of information is missing in the instructions, and that is the width of the strap that you need to cut and/or the kind of masking tape that you need to use. The width of the masking tape for the ratchet tie-downs should be 1/16".

The 10 resin parts can be used to represent turnbuckles. They are small and you will need to remove the resin to open up the center section. The hooks are not provided and you will need to fabricate them using copper wire. No jig is provided to assist in this task.

Conclusion

Nice little set for all modern modelers and easy to use. It is regrettable that only one size of ratchet tie-down is provided.
.
SUMMARY
Highs: Nice ratchet tie-down set and chain hooks.
Lows: Only one ratchet-tie down size. Small handle diameter indicated for the ratchet handle. No width of the masking tape indicated.
Verdict: Really easy to use, fast construction. Excellent results.

For a minute there, i thought Corey Sutton finally got his ratchet straps out on the market. Are they his and he sold the master to Pro Arts or did Pro Arts come out with their own. Anyways, it's good to see them out.

Pete All the ratchets were already included in the M1078 kit from Pro Art Model released last year. So I do believe that they just gather all the pieces to meet customers' needs. Thanks Seb

Yeah Epi, those are not mine. I am still trying to work through all the financial issues I have. It's tough having a family that needs all your money. Every time I think I am getting ahead, something happens and the funds have to go elsewhere. I am still working on it though.

A very competent review, but 98% for a kit with so many "lows"?
SEP 10, 2010 - 03:39 AM
Bill IMHO The lows does not affect the quality of the kit. Cheers Seb
