Burn Out U.S. Jerry Cans, 18pcs, 6 different types

by: Jim Starkweather [ STAFF_JIM ]

MIG Productions has released this set of U.S. Jerry cans which have been burned and ruined by a fire. The text on the package is actually "Burn Out", but we assumed they mean burned out. For those who have never seen this effect before (or pictures showing the real thing), the gas cans are all distorted and warped from the heat of a fire. There are (18) Jerry cans included in this set. There are (6) differently shaped cans on each resin piece. Each resin set has (3) upright cans and (3) cans lying on their sides.

The detail is very good and each set includes the handles as separate pieces to be glued on to the can. The caps are well defined and each can has the G and USA marking on one side and QMC (Quartermaster Corps) marking on the other side (if an upright can).

Obviously these cans will be best used with dioramas of burnt out tanks or AFVs. Burned out buildings or ruins would also potentially be a candidate if that structure had been used as a depot or HQ facility.

I will let the photos speak for themselves as to the quality and creativity shown in the molds themselves. Each piece is well connected to the resin mold so expect some minor sawing on the upright cans and some serious sawing on the others to separate them.

If you are curious about the origins of the Jerry can check out the brief history on Wikipedia. A site called Olive-Drab also has some interesting information on Jerry cans during WWII.
SUMMARY
Highs: Excellent detail and variety of damaged cans.
Lows: Resin may put off some less experienced modelers.
Verdict: A nice addition for the diorama builder wanting to depict this effect.

I started building models in 1971 when I was 6. My first model was a 1/32 P-40 Warhawk. Revell I believe. From there I moved onto the standard cars, Apollo spacecraft, and other kid orientated kits. I don't know what got me started on Armor. I must have seen a Monogram tank kit one day and said "Mom...
